Turkey wrapped up their first round campaign at the U20 European Championship Women in Debrecen with a 61-56 success against France to preserve their unbeaten record and take top spot in Group C.

It was a real blow for France who despite qualifying for the second stage, won't carry their win against Portugal forward meaning they now find themselves on the back-foot in their pursuit of a Quarter-Final berth next week.

Having been beaten by Ukraine, head coach Gregory Halin will have expected his team to have bounced back, but they didn't.

As a result, they also head into the Second Round staring at the possibility of a somewhat unthinkable third successive defeat.

The French certainly had plenty of opportunities to win the game but they were too eager defensively and committed far too many unnecessary fouls.

Neither team could make a truly decisive break during the contest until the closing five minutes when Turkey made their move after the game had been locked at 51-51.

With France already in foul trouble, Turkey was intelligently aggressive and managed to draw the fouls they needed to ice the win from the free-throw line.
